A History of Christus Medicus

In 1987, Michael O'Dea, healthcare consultant and founder of Mother and Unborn Baby Care (pregnancy help center) was counseling a teen age mother who was scheduled to have an abortion.  He asked the mother of this pregnant teenager if her daughter was going to have an abortion because they lacked finances. The mother responded, "Whether she has the baby or aborts it, my insurance with Blue Care Networ will pay."  Since Mr. O'Dea was insured by the same company, he realized he could not subsidize the killing of God's innocent children and needed and alternative.

This experience inspired Michael, along with dedicated priests, religious, business executives, and health care professionals to work together to follow Christ's  call to change the health care culture.

Spearheaded by the Vicar general, a Catholic health insurance program was successfully implemented in the Linclon, Nebraska Diocese. Inititally, the priests of the diocese objected to losing Blue Cross/Blue Shield coverage; however, once the Catholic program was implemented, they were pleased. The program was linked to Catholic health care providers who quickly appreciated that it was beneficial for their organizations, hospitals and physicians. Even more significantly, within six months of implementation, Good Year Tire & rubber, a local employer, made the Catholic network available to its employees.  When Blue Cross/Blue Shield offered to match the Catholic plan, they were invited to come back when they stopped financing abortions and other "culture of death' procedures.

Christus Medicus' ultimate vision is to bring all dioceses together under a national Catholic Health Insurance Program.  This will encourage corporations across the country to add this options for employees. Good morality and economic justice is good business!

The Michigan Catholic Reported,
"We must utilze the advantages of technological advances that construct life instead of death. We need a culture of life against the culture of death".
(Archbishop Javier Lozano Barragan, Pontifical Council for Health Care Worker, March 5, 2000).
